How Vectorize Launched Usage-Based Billing on Maple

We have been working closely with the team at Vectorize, a product that enables RAG (retrieval-augmented-generation) pipelines to turn unstructured data into optimized vector search indexes.

Through a seamless integration with Maple, Vectorize was ready for their public launch of their platform with real-time usage-based billing. While they started off with a self-serve pricing model, their are also ready scale to contracts for larger deals with any custom pricing model.

Challenge

As a modern AI infrastructure product, Vectorize knew that they needed to charge their customers based on the actual consumption of their product. This required them to track usage in real-time with the fidelity in seconds. Given the engineering lift of building and maintaining a revenue platform at scale to handle the desired volume and pricing model flexibility for future iteration, Vectorize knew that needed to integrate with a billing solution and focus on their energy core product growth.

Solution

Recognizing the challenge, Vectorize leveraged Maple's Usage Events API to quickly start logging pipeline usage events in Maple.

"Once we decided to use Maple, I rarely had to think about billing as part of our launch. They simplified complex processes and let us focus on shipping our product."

Chris Latimer – Co-founder and CEO at Vectorize

Results

Through this partnership with Maple, Vectorize quickly launched their usage-based pricing model with future pricing iteration flexibility.

  • Flexible usage-based billing: With real-time tracking and automated invoicing based on customer usage in Maple, Vectorize's engineering team went from worrying about the implementation of usage-based billing infrastructure to focusing on their core product offering.
  • Out-of-the-box reporting: Vectorize can observe their usage patterns and enable the same visibility for their customers as well.
  • Support for different sales motions: Vectorize is now ready to scale their self-serve model alongside their sales-led model all in a single revenue platform with automated provisioning into their app and no percentage of revenue fees.

Conclusion

The successful launch of Vectorize demonstrates the power of flexible, usage-based billing in modern cloud services. By adopting Maple, Vectorize was able to deliver a billing model that aligned costs directly with value, fostering long-term customer trust. Moving forward, Vectorize plans to leverage Maple's analytical tools to further enhance reporting capabilities, helping customers gain even deeper insights into their usage patterns.
